James Gill
James Gill, a rudimentary figure in the birth of Pop Art, has recently emerged from three decades of isolation to deliver his contemporary pieces once again to the public. Gill's technique entails a use of distorted newspaper images with the combination acrylic and watercolor paint. Unlike typical signatures of pop artists' work, James Gill's pieces are described as combining contemporary structure and design with classical influences. James Gill studied art in college and then began painting seriously in 1959. Moving to an artists' colony for several years, James Gill retreated to protect his Pop Art expression rather than succumbing to the materialistic changes of the 70s. Gill's work has graced the cover of Time Magazine and was part of the "Environment USA: 1957-67" exhibit in Sao Paulo, Brazil. James Gill's work has been displayed in several museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian.
